Dr. Carys Massarella, a “trans-warrior physician,” transitioned from male to female at the age of 42. Her story is one of immense personal courage, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to helping others who are walking the same path. Prior to transitioning, Carys always knew she was transgender, describing the feeling as something that had "sat with [her] whole life, like an elephant" - always there but never fully realized. Her professional life is nothing short of extraordinary. Carys is an emergency room doctor at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton and serves as the lead physician for the Transgender Care Program at the Quest Community Health Centre in St. Catharines. Her role at Quest is pivotal not only in providing medical care but also in offering a safe space for trans individuals to seek guidance, support, and affirmation.

As a mentor, she plays a central role in the journeys of the patients featured in My Trans Journey, helping them make informed decisions and navigate the complexities of gender transition. One of the key aspects of Dr. Massarella's approach to transgender care is her emphasis on holistic support. In the documentary, she is seen advising her patients on crucial decisions such as exploring options for bottom surgery and considering fertility preservation before beginning hormone therapy. These moments highlight the importance of informed consent, the need for compassionate care, and the understanding that each trans person’s journey is unique.

While the medical aspects of the patients' transitions are crucial, My Trans Journey offers much more than just a clinical perspective. The documentary delves into the lives of these individuals, showing their hobbies, friendships, and personal victories. This multidimensional approach challenges the often narrow portrayals of transgender people in media, which frequently focus on their struggles rather than celebrating their full, vibrant lives. Dr. Massarella stresses the importance of celebrating trans lives, pointing out that too many portrayals of trans individuals emphasize their hardships, overshadowing the joy and empowerment that can come with transitioning. She believes it is essential to present a more comprehensive view of transgender experiences - one that reflects the richness and diversity of their lives.

Carys’ own journey to self-discovery and transition was deeply influenced by a life-changing experience in 2009 when she treated a transgender woman in the emergency room who was suffering from a heart attack. Despite her best efforts to save the woman, the patient passed away. The experience profoundly impacted Carys, prompting her to reflect on her own life. She recalled thinking to herself, “I just can’t die like this. I have to die as who I really am.” This moment sparked her transition, which ultimately led her to become a leader in transgender healthcare. Since transitioning, Carys has risen to prominence as an advocate for transgender rights. She has delivered TEDx talks, been recognized as one of the World’s 50 Transgender Icons by the Huffington Post, and made history as the first transgender person to serve as president of a medical staff. Her story continues to inspire countless individuals, proving that it is never too late to become the person you were always meant to be.

In addition to her medical practice, Dr. Massarella is deeply involved in community-building initiatives. She is a member of YWCA Hamilton’s board of directors, where she works to ensure that transgender individuals, especially trans women, are seen as integral parts of society. Through her work with YWCA, Carys has helped advocate for the creation of safe, affordable housing for women and their children, and she continues to champion causes that support marginalized communities. As a mother of two teens, Carys understands the importance of role models. She believes that living your best life and embracing one’s true identity is the best way to inspire others, particularly young transgender individuals who may struggle with acceptance or self-worth. Her life and career demonstrate that transgender people are capable of achieving great things, both personally and professionally.

Carys Massarella is also deeply concerned about the challenges that transgender people face in accessing housing. The ongoing housing crisis, which disproportionately affects women and children, poses unique risks to the transgender community, particularly transgender youth. Carys emphasizes that trans individuals are often subjected to discrimination in the housing market and that many trans youth avoid shelters due to the fear of violence and harassment. According to research conducted by McMaster University, 93% of trans people in Hamilton reported feeling unsafe, and more than 50% of Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ individuals have experienced harassment or violence. Carys advocates for a housing system that is inclusive, safe, and free from discrimination, ensuring that trans people, especially transgender women, are not subjected to violence simply because of their gender identity.
