Fairy Garden

edhehwi
Director: Gergö Somogyvári
Release Year: 2023
Original title: Fanni kertje

"Fairy Garden" (2023), directed by Gergö Somogyvári, is a poignant documentary that takes a tender yet unflinching look at the lives of two marginalized individuals who form an unlikely bond in the outskirts of Budapest. Hidden away in the woods, inside a dilapidated hut, lives Fanni, a 19-year-old transgender woman who has been disowned by her family, and Laci, a 60-year-old homeless man who has spent much of his life on the streets. Together, they navigate the harsh realities of life on the fringes of Hungarian society, forming a surrogate father-daughter relationship as they endure hardship and change. While the "odd couple" dynamic is a well-worn narrative trope in modern storytelling, "Fairy Garden" distinguishes itself by balancing tradition with subversion.
