With the documentary airing in Pride Month, the series not only highlights their groundbreaking journey but also serves as a powerful reflection on identity, family, and the fight for acceptance. Mayla and Sofia Albuquerck’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the quest for self-fulfillment. Born in the small Brazilian town of Tapira, in the state of Minas Gerais, the twins grew up in a humble family, surrounded by financial limitations but fueled by an unbreakable bond of love and mutual support. Despite the challenges of their upbringing, the twins' parents did everything they could to nurture their dreams and ensure that their daughters had opportunities, despite living in a conservative society that had little understanding of their transgender identity. In 2021, when they were 19 years old, Mayla and Sofia made the life-changing decision to undergo gender reassignment surgery together in Blumenau, a city in the state of Santa Catarina. They were not only the first twins to undergo the procedure together, but they were also the youngest individuals in Brazil to make this decision at that time. Their surgery was a monumental moment, but it marked the beginning of a new chapter in their lives - one filled with both triumphs and struggles.

The six-episode documentary series explores the unique journey of Mayla and Sofia as they navigate their post-surgery lives. The first three episodes, available at launch, offer an intimate look into the sisters’ reunion during a special vacation back in their hometown. The sisters return to Minas Gerais to participate in a beauty pageant, a dream they had harbored since childhood. However, their participation in the event becomes even more special when they learn that the renowned transgender stylist Michelly X will be designing their outfits. As the twins prepare for the beauty pageant, tensions rise as they face the scrutiny and challenges of being transgender women in their small town. The reactions from their family members and the local community add complexity to their emotional journey, revealing the deep-seated prejudice that still exists, even in the most intimate of environments. The documentary touches on multiple themes, such as love, conflict, career aspirations, personal dreams, and the ongoing struggle for recognition. The series provides an unflinching look at how Mayla and Sofia tackle daily life, while dealing with the weight of societal discrimination and the inner turmoil that many transgender individuals face in their personal quests for happiness and self-realization.

The twins’ story is rooted in a modest beginning. Tapira, a tiny town with only 4,000 inhabitants, is a place where gender norms are deeply entrenched. From a young age, both Mayla and Sofia struggled with their gender identity. Growing up in a conservative town, they were often ridiculed and isolated, particularly during their adolescence when their physical appearances no longer matched societal expectations for their assigned gender at birth. Despite these challenges, the sisters always had each other for support. Their deep connection as twins allowed them to confide in one another and share their most intimate thoughts and experiences. Mayla, who is now studying medicine in Buenos Aires, recalls feeling a disconnect from the identity others saw her as a young child. Sofia, studying engineering in São Paulo, shares similar sentiments about realizing her true gender identity early on, a realization that led to a shared understanding between the two of them. The twins’ transition was not an easy one. During their adolescence, they struggled immensely with the changes occurring in their bodies, experiencing gender dysphoria that made them feel disconnected from their physical selves. Mayla recalls, "I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror without feeling disgusted by what I saw, especially when puberty began. It was a constant battle with my own body."

The twins did not shy away from discussing their physical and emotional struggles, even acknowledging how they resorted to extreme measures to hide their genitalia, using multiple layers of tight underwear to suppress their feelings of dysphoria. Their journey toward surgery was not just about a physical change but about finally feeling whole in their own bodies. In 2021, at the age of 19, they made the decision to undergo the surgery that would allow them to feel more aligned with their gender identity. This was an intense and life-altering decision, but they were motivated by a shared dream of attaining the bodies they had always desired. With the support of their family, especially their grandfather, who sold a property to help finance the surgery, the twins finally underwent gender affirmation surgery in Brazil, becoming the first twins in the world to do so together. The surgery was a success, but as Mayla and Sofia soon discovered, the physical transformation was only part of the process. In the weeks following the surgery, both women experienced emotional lows, grappling with feelings of exposure and the fear of societal rejection. Mayla, in particular, faced suicidal thoughts as she processed the emotional aftermath of the surgery.

In the series, Mayla explains, “After the surgery, I thought that all my struggles would be over, but they weren’t. In fact, I felt even more vulnerable. I thought society would reject me even more, and that was terrifying.” It wasn’t until Mayla began therapy that she began to find a sense of peace with her identity. Therapy became an essential part of her healing process, and she started to embrace her identity with more confidence and resilience. “I no longer care what people think about me. What matters is respecting myself, and that is something I had to learn,” says Mayla. As the documentary progresses, it showcases how the twins have used their platform to help break down taboos surrounding transgender people and their experiences. Both Mayla and Sofia are open about their journey and aim to use their story to inspire others and promote greater acceptance for the transgender community. They have not only shared their struggles but also their victories, such as experiencing sexual pleasure for the first time after the surgery, a moment that allowed them to truly embrace their womanhood. Mayla, who had planned to specialize in thoracic surgery, now envisions a future in gender-affirming surgeries, hoping to contribute to making such procedures more accessible in Brazil, where the cost of gender affirmation surgery is often prohibitive for many transgender individuals. She has already begun developing a program aimed at offering free surgeries to those in need, an initiative that speaks to her deep commitment to the transgender community.
