Anjali Rimi’s story is one of resilience, advocacy, and deep commitment to creating change for marginalized communities. The documentary offers a rare insight into her efforts to provide assistance to those in need in India, a country where transgender individuals face significant societal challenges. "Belonging: An Indian Trans Immigrant Story" is not just a documentary about one individual’s fight for acceptance; it is an exploration of the larger struggles faced by transgender people, particularly in immigrant and marginalized communities. The film shines a light on the need for safe spaces and supportive networks for trans individuals, especially those from the Global South who may face additional layers of discrimination due to their immigration status, cultural background, and gender identity. In the Bay Area, where Anjali is based, she has been instrumental in establishing these spaces for South Asian immigrants, helping them navigate both their gender identity and their immigrant experience. But her advocacy work, as the documentary shows, reaches beyond just one community or one country. The film’s exploration of Anjali's role in both India and the United States underscores the interconnectedness of struggles for justice, equality, and human dignity across borders. By showcasing the experiences of trans, hijra, and kinnar individuals in India, "Belonging" invites viewers to witness the resilience and beauty of these communities as they continue to fight for recognition and acceptance in a world that often ignores them.
