At its core, "American Transgender" is about visibility. The documentary gives voice to young transgender men and women who are navigating their transitions in a world that is often unaware or unsympathetic to their lived experiences. It emphasizes the importance of allowing transgender individuals to tell their own stories, thereby providing viewers with a more authentic understanding of what it means to be transgender. The documentary features a diverse group of individuals, including Clair Farley, at different stages of their transitions. Some of the subjects are grappling with societal rejection, others with the complicated dynamics of their families, and still others are confronting issues of personal acceptance. Interviews with family members provide additional context, showing how parents, siblings, and other loved ones react to their family member's transition. These interviews are particularly significant, as they reflect a broad spectrum of reactions - from deep love and support to initial confusion or resistance. By weaving together these personal accounts with insights from family members, "American Transgender" succeeds in portraying not just the struggles of transgender individuals, but also the emotional journeys of those who love them. Through these stories, the film paints a picture of the powerful bond between transgender people and their families, while also acknowledging the difficulties and misunderstandings that often arise during a person's transition.

One of the most compelling figures in "American Transgender" is Clair Farley, a transgender woman who has not only overcome personal challenges related to her gender identity but has also become a leader and advocate for transgender rights. Clair Farley grew up in Montana with an identical twin brother, Mark, and an older brother. She recalls a childhood marked by her close relationship with her twin, which provided much-needed support as she and Mark both came out as gay at the age of 13. However, it was Clair’s realization that she identified as a woman, rather than a man, that set her on a different path - one that would lead to a gender transition and a lifelong commitment to advocating for transgender rights. Clair's story resonates with many transgender individuals, especially those from more conservative or rural backgrounds, where LGBTQ+ issues were not widely discussed or understood. The isolation and lack of resources for transgender youth in such environments can be stifling, and for Clair, this was no different. She explains that while she came out as trans during high school, her actual transition did not begin until after graduation, when she moved to New York City in search of a more supportive and accepting community. It was in New York that Clair began to live full-time as Clair, and where she started to embrace her identity in ways she hadn’t been able to do in Montana.

Like many transgender individuals, Clair's transition was met with mixed reactions from her family. Her father was supportive from the start, while her mother took longer to adjust to the idea of Clair transitioning. Clair acknowledges that many parents of transgender children go through a process of grieving the "loss" of the child they thought they knew, as well as reconciling the changes with the love they feel for their child. However, Clair also emphasizes the importance of educating families, helping them understand that the essence of the person they love remains the same; it’s just that the individual is now able to live more authentically. In her advocacy work, Clair regularly speaks to parents and families of transgender individuals, encouraging them to be patient and to remember that their children are not disappearing - they are simply revealing their true selves. Her work underscores the critical role that family support plays in a successful transition and the importance of fostering understanding within families.

Clair Farley’s advocacy journey began in college when she became involved in human rights activities. Inspired by the stories of women who stood up against oppression, including the brave transgender women of color who were involved in pivotal moments in LGBTQ+ history such as the Stonewall Riots and the Compton’s Cafeteria Riots, Clair committed herself to the fight for transgender visibility and rights. Clair was the Director of Economic Development at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center, where she focuses on helping low-income LGBTQ+ individuals. She worked on programs designed to build confidence, provide housing, and help people find employment or start businesses. Clair's role in this capacity also included advocating for trans visibility in media and in social programs, both within the United States and internationally. Her work was instrumental in shaping policies that directly benefit transgender people and helped to establish San Francisco as a city that is actively working toward LGBTQ+ equity. As a Senior Advisor to San Francisco Mayor London Breed and the Director of the Office of Transgender Initiatives, Clair was also a pioneering force in public policy. San Francisco’s Office of Transgender Initiatives is the first and only trans-led city department in the United States, and it has been a trailblazer in implementing policies that aim to improve the lives of transgender people, from healthcare access to workplace protections.

In "American Transgender", Clair also reflects on the role of self-image in her transition. Growing up, Clair, like many transgender individuals, struggled with feelings of inadequacy and the notion that she didn’t fit traditional standards of femininity. In her later years, as Clair embraced her true self, beauty became a source of empowerment. She credits makeup and self-care with helping her feel more confident and comfortable in her body. Her journey toward beauty and self-acceptance is also part of her broader message to others, urging them to embrace their individuality and live their truth without shame. As she explains, beauty is not defined by society’s rigid standards, but by the confidence and authenticity a person feels within themselves. One of the most touching aspects of Clair's personal life is her relationship with her husband, Jim Farley, who is also transgender. Their love story is a beautiful example of how shared experiences and mutual understanding can form the foundation of a strong and lasting partnership. Clair and Jim met at a conference focused on transgender media representation, and their connection was instant. Over time, their relationship deepened, and they married after several years of dating. Clair reflects that while she had never dated another transgender person before Jim, their shared experiences of navigating the world as transgender individuals brought them closer together. Jim, like Clair, saw beyond traditional gender norms and fell in love with Clair for who she was as a person, rather than for her anatomy or gender identity. Clair’s story with Jim underscores a larger message: love transcends societal expectations of gender and body. Their relationship exemplifies how love is about much more than physical appearance or traditional gender roles. It is about mutual respect, emotional connection, and understanding.

Through the stories of young transgender people, including Clair Farley, the film underscores the importance of visibility, family support, and advocacy in creating a more inclusive and understanding society for transgender people. Clair Farley’s personal journey - one of transition, self-acceptance, and social advocacy - serves as a powerful reminder that the fight for transgender rights is far from over. While much progress has been made in terms of visibility and public policy, there is still work to be done.
